How to use the grammar checker
- Paste or type your text in the box. Choose your variety of English (US, UK, Canada, Australia and more).
- Press Check grammar (or Ctrl + Enter).
- Mistakes are underlined in the preview. Click an underline to jump to its explanation.
- Click a green suggestion to fix it, press Ignore to skip it, or Accept all to apply every first suggestion.
- Copy or download your corrected text.
What it checks
- Spelling: typos and commonly misspelled words.
- Grammar: subject–verb agreement, wrong verb forms, a/an, their/there/they're, its/it's, could of/could have and more.
- Punctuation and spacing: missing capitals, doubled words, extra spaces and spaces before punctuation.
- Style: wordy phrases and redundancies (advanced checker only).
How it works and privacy
Advanced checking is powered by the open-source LanguageTool engine. When you press Check grammar, your text is sent securely to LanguageTool's API for analysis. It is not stored by us. If the service can't be reached, or your text is over 20,000 characters, a basic checker runs entirely in your browser instead. Avoid checking confidential information.
Frequently asked questions
Is the grammar checker free?
Yes, there is no sign-up and no limit on how often you check. Very long documents are best checked a few pages at a time.
Does it replace proofreading?
It catches most common errors, but no automatic checker is perfect. Read important documents once more before you send them.
Which languages are supported?
The tool is designed for English. Choose "Detect language" to check other languages supported by LanguageTool, such as Spanish, French, German and Portuguese.
