Characters with and without spaces
Many platforms count every character including spaces, while some academic and translation tasks count characters without spaces. This tool shows both. Line breaks count as spaces.

- SMS: 160 characters for a single standard text message (70 if it contains emoji or non-Latin letters).

Frequently asked questions
How are emoji counted?
Each emoji you see counts as one character, even emoji that are made of several code points, like flags or family emoji. The byte size shows how much storage the text actually needs.
What is the byte count for?
Databases, APIs and some forms limit text by bytes rather than characters. In UTF-8, English letters use 1 byte, accented letters 2 bytes and most emoji 4 bytes.
Is my text private?
Yes. Counting happens in your browser and your text is never uploaded.
